Of Liberty And Science. Masks Are Neither

My position is simple when it comes to masks.

The science is such that the effectiveness of masks is inconclusive. In fact, the potential negative effects suggest it may not even be beneficial. Some research shows it can work in certain scenarios provided everything goes right (ie proper mask usage, social distancing, hand washing) but the odds of this are long.

The masks remain, I maintain by all the literature I keep reading, psychological more than anything. To some it gives the sense of an albeit false sense of security and may lead to a social habit we shouldn't be under taking.

But the movement is strong enough such that it became mandatory somehow based on limited evidence.

If people want to wear them voluntarily and government wants to mandate them in government spaces, so be it. Encourage its usage. People can then make the decision for themselves.

I personally believe it can have negative health consequences on my family and don't consider the science behind it to be sufficient enough to take that risk.

By mandating it the government directly threatens a) my right to decide and b) the health of my family.

Why should one belief or side take precedence over another given the available facts about masks?

The idea that masks are liberty in order to keep our economy going is a faulty one based on faulty premises made early during the pandemic. It points to the fact we're not evolving with the data and seem married to the notion of lockdowns as an effective measure.

Considering the trade-offs remains off the table which should concern if not distress us all.

The science doesn't justify mass mandates nor does it mean freedom.

It's the opposite. It's the suspension of civil liberties based on specious science.

How can suppressing your identity remotely be construed as freedom? Then again, we live in a time where freedom of speech has degrees when in fact there's no such thing as 'hate' speech. There's just free speech.

So for me it's straightforward: There's enough to perhaps encourage voluntary usage. Not enough to force it onto others.
