Pandemic Fallout: What Exactly Is Ottawa Good For?

T.C.: Are you listening to what Ottawa is saying?
Friend: Justin? I don't listen to him. I listen to LCN and Legault. The Feds may as well not exist.

If there's anything this pandemic is revealing is just how disjointed Canada can be under weak and ineffective leadership.

To characterize the Liberals performance as underwhelming is an under statement stating the obvious.

Like my friend, I haven't listened to a single press conference by any Liberal Minister. They don't answer questions anyways so why should I listen? Moreover, I'm not interested in being lectured and reminded on what to do 'or else' by a leader who doesn't follow the rules himself.

A true leader is at the forefront standing before the nation. The leader would show up in Parliament and not leave it to his Deputy. That's what I think. That he was observing 'social distancing' is phooey given he split for the cottage in Harrington Lake, QC after specifically warning Canadians:

Enough is enough, go home and stay home'.

In addition, Canadians are being fined for merely engaging in activities even when observing social distancing rules. Thankfully, Quebec has been far more civil and respectful of citizens on this count so far.

Yet, the Trudeaus see fit to cross provincial lines to celebrate Easter. As if this wasn't enough, the PM's wife Sophie Gregoire posts pictures of their fabulous day on Instagram.

This after he gave some moist speech about how difficult it would be for Canadians to not see family on the Holiest of Christian observances.

This is how you lose the plot and credibility.

People who are defending this are missing the point. That is, he's not observing his own protocols.

But be assured, they'll be the first to applaud themselves for the grand jobs they did protecting Canada.

In their minds of course. And with their fans.

For the rest of us, Ottawa has never been more irrelevant.

It's mighty remarkable watching this country stumble around with no sense of identity or purpose like this. Trudeau has guided this shipwrecked this colossus ship. If the fragmented election result wasn't enough to convince someone of this, then the pandemic and the entire manner in which it was handled could start to raise some concerns.

Where Ottawa and Liberals have failed Canadians spectacularly (sending us into further debt by offering loans or having them go on CERB or EI because of a dubious self-induced shut down is hardly a solution since this will only exacerbate the problem down the road as the country heads into a spending spiral exploding the debt), I can say to this point, I'm please with Quebec's handling of it.

All along the way, the province has been calm, collected and measured fully aware of balancing social distance dictats while avoiding heavy handed actions like we see elsewhere on the continent. At the moment, observing what's happening in other provinces and states, I'm actually happy to be here.

Legault is also clearly not pleased with Trudeau and who can blame him? Where Trudeau has taken a sudden turn towards 'we will stay shut indefinitely', Quebec (which has been hit hardest of all the provinces) has been quietly preparing to ready the province to open up.

I'm not happy that we shut down but my anger is somewhat tempered by the fact Quebec seems to be genuinely understanding of our concerns about the economy and don't want it to be closed more than a single minute more than it has to.

Justin is foolishly attempting to ready Canada to shut down. Which brings me to the point of this post.

European countries are opening up. While, the United States is itching to open up (unrest has begun. For example, Michigan has seen some protests thanks, in part, to the dictatorial actions of its Governor). It is true Canada is a little behind these places, it's not out of the realm of possibility the dire figures thrown around may not happen as the country's state of preparedness seems to be working.

Along with Quebec, Alberta and B.C. have perhaps been even more on the ball.

With health and education (and in the case of Quebec the added leeway with some control over immigration), the provinces are acting in the best interest of their citizens.

Ontario is probably the only province where its citizens (and the Maritimes), are probably tuning in to see what Federal officials are saying. I don't know. I'm just guessing seeing these are the regions that gave Trudeau a rich undeserved minority government.

In any event, Quebec is going to decide for itself and on this front I stand with the province.

Imagine that. The Federal government of Canada has been so poor that a Canadian of Italian heritage in Quebec who never voted for independence or nationalist parties now finds himself firmly in the Quebec City camp and not Ottawa.

I've never felt more disconnected from Canada and lament its irrelevance in my life.

This is the legacy of the Liberal party of Canada for me. They don't give the impression they've had Canada's interest fully at heart. They still give the whiff of playing the ideologue and PC game. They should have been much more forceful the second they knew there was a problem.

I truly hope Canada gets back its stride one day but it won't happen until either the Liberals resign or its leader steps down.
