Teaching Remembrance Day

My wife today told me a story about how she tried to delicately explain Rememberance Day (including the famous 'In Flanders Field' poem) to her 1st grade class. As she went along explaining how countries "disagree" her students were one step ahead. She works at an inner-city school and many of the kids are from Asia and Africa. Some of which are unstable countries where sectarian violence and civil war is all too common. One child put up his hand and spoke of the violence in Sri Lanka. Another Egypt. And another in Africa - the country escapes me at the moment. It saddens her to think went children go through. What evil they have seen.

It certainly is a reminder of how precious stability and liberty really is.
