Why Do The British Believe In The EU Dream?

I don't like what I see coming out of the UK these days. Notably on the rise of their police state and the crack down on free speech as well as their refusal to deal with crimes that have any connection to Muslim communities.

Then there's Brexit.

The interesting and bizarre thing about this are twofold for me.

One, it's pretty galling how the sanctity of the democratic process is being completely over run and ignored in tying to stall on negotiating an exit. The side that keeps telling people who important democracy is and how it's under threat from populists and the 'alt-right' (whoever they are) are, well, engaging in some projection by actually demeaning democracy.

There was a referendum. The people voted. Leave won over Remain. Move on.

But no. Just like in the after math of the election of Trump in 2016, the losing side refuses to accept the result and thus began a smear campaign. Allegedly, those who voted to leave were too stupid to realize they were being fed lies by who else? Russians!

This whole narrative about 'fake news' or 'tampering with elections' stuff is a ruse to crack down on alt-media which have been doing an outstanding job of reporting and investigating. I have a feeling we're about to get a taste of this in the fall with our own elections here in Canada.

In any event, as far as I can tell, the losing side is saying dumb Brits were fooled into voting for ‘Leave’ thus fooling themselves into thinking they have a ‘duty’ (or moral right) to prevent its fulfillment.
Is it not wiser and safer, for the sake and sanctity of a democracy in the long run, to accept the legal result of a democratic referendum rather than deny it?
The other part is the strange connection and relationship Britain has with the EU. It's worth pointing out the UK were generally the most notorious skeptics of the ECC and later the EU (France under De Gaulle not wanting them in didn’t help) who later had no interest whatsoever in joining the Euro. The UK aren't fully integrated to the extent the 'Big Three' continentals are.

Yet, they're acting like they somehow have much to lose and can’t live without the EU?

If any country could probably pull off a disengagement with the EU it's them.

But hey. Democracy and Russia you know?
