High Taxes Keep Talent Away

I think it's a well-known fact why the Montreal Canadiens don't attract top-flight stars anymore. Once upon a time, you had to play for the Montreal Canadiens to have on your CV. Now, it's more of a symbolic thing and secondary. Players in the twilight of their careers wouldn't mind capping it wearing the CH - after they've made their money.

Consider this graph for why this is so. Taxes.

Taxes and language headaches. Those are the major reasons. Simple as that. The latter being a "it doesn't help" sort of consideration. No one wants be Saku Koivu'd. Life is hard enough as it is to put up with the clownish navel-gazing. It's all about trade-offs and Montreal is competing with 29 other cities that offer as much if not more than this city. Like I said off the top, once upon a time our unique advantage was the dynasty and success of the club. Now we're one team among many with the Detroit Red Wings as the premier organization. Imagine that, even with Detroit in social and economic malaise they still have/has superstars in their line up we can only dream of here.
