Canada's Meek Voice?

Canada's foreign policy might (relative to a middle power) questioned.

Has Canada lost its way?

I don't think there's much doubt our diplomatic corps is what it once was. A sad trend, much like our military, that's been taking places since the 1970s I reckon.

We may as well have laryngitis on the international stages.

  1. Canada is not what we call a "world power." And Switzerland seems to have the monopoly on being a mediation star.

  2. Never was a world power but once upon a time we had a place on the world map. So-called "punching above its weight."

Now as you say, other countries have stepped in.

  3. I wish I had come back here sooner. I am not as familiar with Canadian history as some so I am curious as to when that period was you spoke of?

  4. The general "golden age" of Canadian diplomacy where our role in international affairs had some impact despite our small size was between 1945-1975 - as a rough estimate.

Then things started getting away from us; first among this was the scaling back of our once proud diplomatic corps. The book 'While Canada Slept' describes this very well.
