Notice the use of the word 'they'. He does that a lot. Along with 'I' when he wants to take credit for things.

The President, for all intents and purposes, is full of it. It's been reported and widely known inside the White House, when present (and this is rare) he barely takes his briefings in person.

He knew. He was debriefed. And if he took his job a tad more like a statesman rather than a politically correct activist, he would not be throwing people under the bus left, right, and center.
