Question

Would liberal ideas stand on its own without protection or support of the state?

  1. The obvious answer is... of course not!

But digging deeper, I think the answer might be... of course they would. They have for countless years.

Maybe a better question would be... "Should liberal ideas have the protection and support of the state?"

  2. Liberal ideas from The Enlightenment do stand on its own. I should have qualified it with "modern" liberalism as it looks - to me anyway.

I like the rephrase you propose. In that light, I would conclude that they shouldn't.

  3. I might re-qualify and say they should have the protection, but not necessarily the support, of the state. It is the people who should decide if the ideas should have the support.
