The anti-corruption squad raided the residence of the Mayor of Laval (Quebec's second largest city) Gilles Vaillancourt.
Well, let's just say, let's keep him innocent until proven guilty. But there always were suspicions...

About the mafia in the construction industry.
While Quebec looks on rivited by the findings, it really is old news for the Italian community.
When my cousins visited from Calabria (home of the most powerful mafia in the world the 'Ndregheta), the first thing they said was, "something is not right here." They noticed it by simply observing the buildings, businesses and cops.
Anyway.
Italian police and magistrates have been warning Canada for over 20 years we were vulnerable to mafia activities. They basically pleaded Canada take it more seriously but we never did in typical naive Canadian fashion. Now, it may be too late. 'Ndregheta is beyond ruthless when it comes to protecting its "assets."
While the Sicilians are key to all this, it's the Calabrese now calling the shots.
The Italian mafia is so infiltrated not just in construction, but banking and politics as well across the continent I would suggest.

Speaking of the Montreal mafia, Vito Rizzuto has been released and is in Toronto. My father was the tailor to (most of) the Rizzuto clan and one time, they brought along a special guest: Michael Jackson's father.
