Paul McCartney once said it was the most beautiful love song ever.
It's still a beaut.
'Pet Sounds' apparently influenced The Beatles to go in and write 'Revolver.'
The race to the top it once was.
Today? The bottom. Who can over produce, over choreograph, over manufacture, music, emotions and lyrics gets zeeee spoils. So it seems.
Are The Beach Boys the greatest American rock band ever?
How strange that you should post this today (well, okay, maybe not that strange) as I was just talking to someone about The Beach Boys and their greatest album, Pet Sounds. I was even going to include a YouTube of God Only Knows in an upcoming post. Are you stealing my ideas before I even post them? I must have this psychic power of yours! (you see, I really do think it strange).
ReplyDeleteAnd I think Paul McCartney went further than that in his praise, calling Pet Sounds a favorite album and God Only Know his favorite song.

Maybe, but The Beach Boys may also have been influenced by The Beatles 1965 album Rubber Soul in the writing of Pet Sounds, and I also thought it was Sgt. Pepper that was more influenced by it, not Revolver (though maybe they both were).

I still can't decide who the candidates are for Greatest American Rock Band.
Be forewarned. I have a "chip."
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right about 'Rubber Soul.' Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.
Well, I would think the short list would include: The Velvet Underground, The Doors, The Eagles and The Beach Boys. Dunno if Bruce Springsteen AND The E Street Band qualifies.
The thing I've noticed about American artists is they tend to be great individual acts - the independent singer/song writer. Whereas the British seemed to have produced more famous bands. You can name several British bands in one swoop. Heck, even Canadian: Rush, B.T.O, Rush, The Band, The Guess Who, Steppenwolf.
