Why should this surprise anyone, considering the saber rattling from the U.S. toward Iran over the last several years, not to mention the fact that Israel is the most powerful nation militarily in the region, and has about 200 nuclear warheads.
All nations have a right to defend itself indeed Iran included. As long as we're aware what type of regime Iran is.
I guess it depends from what angle you look at this. All governments compete to enhance and preserve their interests so on that front I place them all on an equal footing.
However, although Israel is the most powerful army in the region (though I think its might has waned a little), it didn't really threaten Iran. In fact, it's the other way around.
Iran is a known destabilizing actor (as was Iraq) in the region with its terrorist operations. Arab countries align more with Israel when it comes to that issue.
Iran does more to threaten Israel.
Moreover, Iran is run by theocratic thugs. Not one major nation considers it a rational player in the arena. Quite frankly, anyone claiming the opposite is a fool.
Iran's sham government is unpopular among its own people. The best way is to internally topple it. I don't see why military intervention is needed.

Also, the idea that Iran is a serious threat to Israel is a joke. Again, Israel is the only state with nuclear weapons in the Middle East, and with an estimated 200 to 300 warheads, I don't think they are truly worried about any weapons Iran may acquire. They do have an agenda, however, to draw the U.S. further into the mess over there.
Nikk's right on this. Iran has every right to arm themselves. Maybe if Western nations destroyed all of its nuclear arms, we would have a leg to stand on.

I said arm, not defend. The truth is, the Iranian government is the best they've had in generations, perhaps even since the fall of the Ottoman Empire, though I think everyone acknowledges they have a long way to go.
If we had the people's best interests at heart, we might want to consider lifting some of the sanctions so that medicine didn't have to be rationed because of our foreign policy.
