Genetically Modified Foods: The Debate Rages But Science Firmly On Side

What do I think about GM crops and foods?

I have no problem with it because I haven't really heard a real, hard scientific fact to be concerned.

The debate is a good one and should continue but for now I think the promise of human ingenuity is something to encourage not deter.

Those against GM foods also believe in global warming; specifically man-made global warming. Which is interesting because in the latter, they claim "scientific consensus" in the matter (of which there isn't) but in the case of GM there is clear consensus among scientists that they are safe but those are ignored or refuted.

I don't think any level of science would be accepted by those who simply want labeling.

Good, concise article here.  (Food Ethics Blog). Notice how passionate people are on the subject in the threads. I think valid points are raised on all counts (especially on the issue of allergies in which I have a personal and business vested interest) but the good professor clearly holds the upper hand here in his disciplined intellectual approach.

Though some people in the threads are confused as to what "rights" are. The professor did his best to logically explain it, alas, people will believe what they want to believe.

Recommended.

Know what I think? I think that the vast majority of people simply don't know how to rationalize the information already disclosed on foods as it stands. And those who go out and look things up like 'palm oil' and 'modified palm oil' and 'hydrogenated palm oil' lack any kind of scientific or chemical knowledge to be able to understand what they are reading.

Not they we're complete idiots but there are limits to how much information we can digest without being vulnerable to junk science.

I think we kinda know what we think is bad or not healthy and try to steer of certain ingredients but believing those to be "linked" or a "cause" to diseases is quite another leap.

I read labels and I readily confess to not understanding everything even after some research. I reserve questions for scientists and often the answers I get quell what really can be alarmist concerns.

It's a journey buying food.
