Would Montreal ever elect a non-Francophone Mayor?
I'm not hopeful. Our politics is too divisive and the skin of nationalists too thin.
The irony is Montreal boasts about being one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, but its leaders never reflect this. In the USA, African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Italians, Irish, Jews etc. get elected with regularity in major urban centers.
Montreal is governed by French-speaking white men as it would be said down south.
On this front, Montreal actually lags.
