This senseless regulation put in place by Minister of Employment and Social Development (I can't believe I just typed that), I gather, to 'protect' local talent which is nonsense.
"In the article he quotes Spencer Brown, the longtime booker for downtown
Calgary venue “The Palomino’ “They are targeting the little guy,
they’re targeting small venues, they’re targeting small business,” he
says. “So, me, as the promoter at The Palomino, which will hold 200
people at the best of times, is paying out $425 per band member whereas a
guy from a huge promotions company putting on a 20,000-seater for Elton
John in the stadium is tax free.”
Oh, you mean government regulation is unfair? I hadn't noticed.
I guess this is Jason Kinney's idea of 'employment and social development' is to bog people down with fees and regulations. Smart move.
All this protect the culture crap is pure BS in Canada.
I swear, between the interventionist parties of the PC, Liberals and NDP, it's getting thin as to who to support these days.
You can sign the petition at Change.org.
If you love music, then sign and support. Canadian music lovers and the small venues that bring in acts (which by the way are the best way to discover new musicians) shouldn't get shafted like this.
