That the British opted to not support the USA in Syria was quite striking. Made me wonder, "What the heck did Obama do to them?"
So I looked it up.
Turns out Anglo-American relations since his election have cooled.
So Obama distanced himself from Britain, Canada was a non-starter, while Russo-American relations remain strained to say the least; to say nothing of the White House non-existent relationship with Congress. I don't think he particularly enamored himself with Eastern Europe (the gutting of anti-missile defense made sure of that) or Germany either. His administration has failed to make in-roads with Japan despite a strong focus on the Pacific Rim. Now, to add, Mexico and Brazil are upset about NSA spying.
It's as if Obama sees politics only through the prism of power and not relationships.
He should not wonder why, then, Britain didn't fall in line. Heck, if anything, if Obama miscalculates over Syria there can be some serious ramifications in the region. For example, what happens if Israel faces the brunt of any retaliation?
