How can you arm the very terrorists you're at war with?

Bassar said on 60 Minutes he's out to kick terrorists out of his country and basically accused the Obama administration of supporting it. He positioned himself as being no different than the U.S. on its right to defend itself against terrorism.
Not only does Putin have the upper-hand, but Bassar's take on things certainly offered glimpse into what he's thinking. Yeah he's a dictator and yes, he possibly did use chemical weapons but the civil war is a war on many fronts and for America to pick a side may not be so wise in this instance.
