Where The Government Stands On Syria

President Obama keeps referring to the UK as its closest ally.

Canadians have always taken it for granted that we were its closest ally - I mean, being neighbours and all but since the Bush administration when our behavior turned sourly anti-American, it's no surprise the Americans barely give us the time of day. While Harper's government is far more friendlier and sympathetic to American concerns, there's been a serious cooling in relations with the U.S..

This trend clearly began under the Chretien Liberals but the Conservatives haven't fared that much better in getting noticed.

In terms of Syria, Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird is repeating all the 'we must act' and 'Syria must face consequences' lines the UK and American leadership is using.

The people, on the other hand, are not biting.

As far as I'm concerned, any Canadian involvement should be debated in the House of Commons like the Brits did and just like the Americans are going to Congress as they ought to have done from the beginning.

So far it's been supported Canada politically and morally supports the United States but have not been asked to send military assistance.

Baird asked:

"What are people going to say next week if 5,000 people are gassed? What are people going to say next month if 25,000 people are gassed?" he said in an exclusive interview with host Evan Solomon on CBC Radio's The House, following a meeting with Sergei Lavrov, Baird's Russian counterpart. "This is a poor man's weapons of mass destruction and this guy cannot be allowed to get away with it."

Syria is run by murderous creeps. No question about it. Esoterically, it's awful to see children killed in this manner.

Syria has always been a nasty sort of place. But I still don't see how this justifies military foreign aggression in the name of humanitarianism.

Especially in Syria where strikes would actually help terrorists; that our own campaign would result in innocent deaths. Am I the only who sees something wrong with this picture?  Not only that, bombing Syria is not like bombing Kosovo or Rwanda or Afghanistan. Syria actually has an air force that can inflict damage and cause death.
