It's not massacres that represent low probabilities variances (about on par with being killed by a terrorist), that should give pause to citizens. It's the rise of the police state.
The perpetual wars on terror and drugs is destroying the fabric of America's credibility on the world stage and its morality.
Canada is marginally better on that front. Our police forces in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec are not immune to abuses.
Cut out the hero worship a little and stop giving up civil liberties for security. By doing that, you're giving the state the green light to go medieval on your ass. And they will do so.
No entity is better at hurling appeals to emotions than government.
