In the 1980s, British and Irish musicians culled their talents to form Band-Aid. Founded by Bob Geldoff (who remains active in Africa until this day) the proceeds from the hit single "Do they know it's Christmas" was for famine relief in Ethiopia.
This led to the American version was by USA for America and "We are the world" while Canada's Northern Lights chimed in with "Tears are not enough."
Altruism abounded.
So. Did/do the Africans know it was/is Christmas? Let's answer this, because you know, inquiring minds want to know.
With a population of roughly 850 million about 330 million are Muslim - that's 40% of the continent. I'd say, then, 40% didn't give a shit. Approximately half of Ethiopia's 70 million people are Muslim and, well, no one is Christian. It stands to reason, I will take a guess, they know Ramadan more.
I have to conclude, someone didn't do their homework. In addition, there's some Western projection going on here. Sorry to be such a stickler 25 years later.
Bah.
It's still was a neat concept and it did leave quite an impact.
