No time to discuss Friedman's ridiculous article.
But I liked this response.
"Nonsense Thomas. The positions and tactics being practiced by this
'radical', 'extremist' minority could easily be put down by a 'sensible'
majority counterpart, cordially aligning with their adversaries across
the aisle in the interests of saving our democracy. Good grief man,
exactly what political spectacle have you been watching?
No,
these 'radicals' are taking, believe it or not, a populist position, one
recognizing that today's ubiquitous federal government, swimming in the
comfortable political luxury of wanton profligacy is actually a
malignant abomination before our founding principles, one demanding the
long-overdue rise of the statesmen, challenging fundamentally the toxic
ways and liberty-forfeiting chicanery of the politicians.
The
individuals taking these stands are the patriots of our age; the
surgeons, if you will, selflessly making the first painful incisions
necessary to begin excising 75 years of corrupt statist bloat,
mind-numbingly parroted as today's normal (!) by a subservient,
hopelessly biased media on whom FAR too many Americans naively rely for
balanced news and perspective. We've become a nation of addicts, hooked
on a generous, caring and 'fair' bounty benevolently bestowed upon us by
a feeling and sympathetic Uncle Sam.
Except that it's all a
charade, an unsustainable out-of-control fantasy whose end is an America
in ruins. You're right that the future of our democracy is at stake.
But you're utterly, contemptibly wrong about who lit the fuse."
