Something you don't see here in Quebec: Charge a driver for driving under the influence who killed three (including Anaheim Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart) people with murder. We have guys driving around with multiple driving convictions with so much as a slap on the wrist.
I don't know if the person convicted is an alcoholic but if he was, I'd have a little trouble with chraging him. Alcoholism is a disease.
Does this person deserve 50 years?
50 years for what is essentially a negligent accident... no, the guy does not deserve that. If you start handing out trumped up charges, I truly and honestly believe it will cause more deaths.
ReplyDeleteI don't drink, but suppose I did. And suppose I think, "I can have a few and be okay." And suppose I do it for years, maybe even decades, without incident. Then one day I do hit someone, for arguments sake let's say it's a pedestrian. Now, if I live in the world where I will get 50 years in prison for this accident... am I going to stop and call the police and ambulance? Or is that pedestrian going to lie abandoned on the sidewalk, dying?
I just find harsh punishment to be a horrible deterrent for crime, and more of a motivator for cover ups. Yes, there should be some punishment, but if someone thinks their life is going to be over if they do the right thing (by which I mean seeking medical help for the victims of the accident), they won't do it.
I'm with you Bret. I think it's an excessive sentence. The guy is 23. I thought we were supposed to try and help rehab people.
ReplyDeleteNotice what the prosecutirs said in defense of seeking that sentence. Seems lame to me.
Lately I've been missing words, punching wrong letters. I think I'm getting some sort of mental lapse disorder.
ReplyDeleteOh.
ReplyDeleteF-you Packers.
