Clinton recently compared Putin's actions to Hitler. Nice. What a swell foreign affairs team the USA has at the moment. Clinton, Kerry, Hagel and Obama. A foursome fit for a game of bridge perhaps but dealing with Ukraine and Russia may be a tad too much having hears some of their comments.
Let's just say Hilary's and Kerry's aptitudes for historical analogies leaves much to be desired.
Meanwhile, my wife left the TV on CNN as she attended to our daughter. Erin Burnett was interviewing a couple of pundits about Hilary's comments which while condemned became, surprise, a spanking for the GOP.
WaPo David Ignatius gets butthurt lamenting America can't 'speak as one voice.' While Michael Smerconish (who I enjoy listening to) believes GOP criticism of the President doesn't look good on the world stage.
They're both wrong.
To Smerconish's point, let's cut to the chase. My impression of Putin (having read about this leopard soothing guru) is he doesn't give a shit either way. Russia has its own play at hand in the Crimea.
Yeah maybe he can interpret the "dissent" as Obama not having a mandate but let's get real here. I don't seem to recall any liberals worry too much about that when Bush was prosecuting his war. At every turn before (when they voted for him), during and after his Presidency they undermined their Presidents even taking tours around the world to criticize him. You can expect that if war is ever declared the warboners and GOP will close ranks.
So they can take that left turn at Albuquerque and keep on riding off the hypocrisy cliff.
As for Ignatius, he tread the utopian 'why can't we all get along like we used to line' even though the President is showing absolutely no wisdom in dealing with the Ukraine. At the moment, like he was arming terrorists in Syria, his stance aligns him with neo-Nazi's.
So forgive thinking Americans if they don't close ranks with Obama on this foolishness, Ignatius.
We criticize the American public for its ignorance and apathy (sometimes both together) yet, when they do exercise some thinking muscles, they're told it's not proper.
What's that eloquent UK saying again? Piss off is it?
While it would be great to have a Pearl Harbor or 9/11 moment, the fact is Ukraine is not enough of an issue to rally a politically and culturally diverse nation like the United States.
A free society will NEVER be unanimous in its stance.
And that's a GOOD THING.
