Personally, I still can't believe VHS prevailed over Beta but that's neither here or there anymore.
But I'm glad that it served Romanians living under a ruthless communist regime well.
The thing that always gets me when I watch these videos is how it exposes just how stupid and insipid apologists for socialism and communism in the West are. There are plenty of dopes on Slate, Rolling Stone, Huffington, The Nation, Salon, The Guardian and other liberal sites still trying to intellectually defend the human travesty that were socialism and communism in the 20th century. Makes me wonder about their state of mind.
I also wonder about the class of people who think it's okay to call for all sorts of bans and censorship under various excuses for the collective good. Taken to its logical end, their position simply take you on a road to communism.
I highly doubt any of these folks would voluntarily live under such conditions, yet, still advocate for coercion and punitive measures to support their agenda and ideals.
*Six minute video from The New York Times. I wonder if their editorial boards connect their positions to what's in the video. I do see a faint connection.

This is already in my to post list, but once again you've beat me to it. Yeah, there are lots of fools who still tell us how wonderful socialist/commie regimes were and are. I had a run-in on Facebook with a Castro lover who would not admit that Cuba under Communism had ever suppressed dissent. Wouldn't answer the question, and I linked to recent cases in Cuba reported by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. His response? "Meh."
ReplyDeleteThat's why they're assholes.
ReplyDeleteExactly.
DeleteThe Cuba fan I mention also said that all those stories of repression in Cuba were lies and anti-communist propaganda. He knew this was the case because, get this, he'd made a trip to Cuba so he'd been there and seen the paradise for himself, and since I've never traveled to Cuba, I didn't know what I was talking about.
He's a lying sack of shit you know why? I've been to Cuba too and lemme tell you, it takes a special kind of asshole to come back and report garbage like that idiot. All I saw was abject poverty, a police state spying on citizens, stores and pharmacies with empty shelves. Honestly, in just one week I can write a book of what I observed. Fuck Castro and fuck that guy in the ear.
DeleteI have no tolerance for pieces of shits like him.
