Telling Numbers?

It's a week I've been meaning to comment on figures (actually, I may have already done so for one of them regarding Independents not too long ago) recently published in the American media about the President.

40% of Independents are fleeing the Obama scene and 91% of blacks support the President.

The former, while not too out of the norm in American politics, is a whopping figure that may significantly impact the election in November. The latter makes me wonder: If whites in the Tea Party are racists, does this mean blacks are too?

How 'bout rationalizing dem apples?

Man. For a post-partisan-racial transformative figure he's mighty divisive.

It ain't easy being boss of America I reckon.

  1. How about rationalizing the fact that Republicans are overtly racist. Black people hear Republicans like Newt Gingrich calling the president a "tribesman," and Sarah Palin telling radio hosts who call black callers complaining of racism "niggers" that they should "reload, not retreat."

I'm sorry, but Republicans are not even a viable option. It's to the point I might actually vote for Democrats this year because Republicans are officially bat-shit crazy hate-mongers.

Can you even pretend to do a little research into how racist and elitist Republicans are? It would really help you not look like a retard.

  2. You answered a question with an unsubstantiated claim and opinion. Not fact. Not to mention the usual ad hominen. Really, you were doing fine until the last paragraph.

And in order for you to demand others do research you need to do it yourself.

I've heard racist comments from both sides of the fence. You're just a selective ass. That's not my problem.

And holy jesus christ, if you think liberals can't be elitist and racist then you have your head up your dog's ass. And don't even try and tell me it's "less" on that side.

PROVE IT. Until then. BULL SHIT.

ps: I like you Bret, but don't come here and call me a retard ever again especially when your own comment failed to answer the question.

I don't do it to you even though I disagree largely with you. I think you're a smart guy that enhances this blog but I expect the same courtesy in return.

    Fair enough?

  3. AND ANSWER THE QUESTION.

  4. My answer: I can't imagine why any black person would ever vote Republican based on how overtly anti-black they are. It has nothing to do with "racism," it has to do with anti-black hostility. It's not racist to look at Republicans as a black person and think "Huh, these people don't like me, I should support Democrats."

You're trying desperately to make every side equal, grasping for racism straws without even one instance of proof that Democrats are racist. I don't see it. Everytime Fox News comes up with a blurb, it's shown to be grossly out of context, like the woman who said she didn't help a poor white farmer, Fox News conveniently cut out before the end of her speech when she pointed out what she had done was wrong and should not be a mistake repeated.

When have you ever heard of a white person publicly saying, "I fucked over a black guy, but I know it was wrong." It's not because white people aren't racists, they just never seem to come clean. Most white people aren't racist, but the ones who have done racist things are unapologetic and often proud of it.

Unfortunately for you, the burden of proof is not on me to prove Democrats are not racist, it's on you to prove Democrats are racist. I can provide you the names and quotes of dozens of racist Republican elected officials, I would love to see you produce one Democrat, let alone a black racist.

Sorry, pal, you're still retarded to me. You could just admit there are plenty of racist Republicans, it's not my claim that every Republican is racist or that people who oppose Obama are racist.

Let me try to put this in logical terms: not every Republican is a racist, but if you're a racist, you're probably a Republican. That's just an observation that has become a maxim, and as someone who isn't even a self-identified Democrat, I have no vested interest in cherishing it and holding onto it should it be disproven. But... we don't live in that world, where liberals are running around being racist and hating on the poor oppressed white majority.

  5. I think you'll also find someone who hates Muslims, Hispanics, or really any non-WASP will be a Republican.

Another way of putting it: Republicans are not a party of racists, but it is the party for racists. I would say it makes up maybe 5-10% of Republican voters, based on my casual observation of only 2-5% of the American population being racist.

I have literally never met someone who was even remotely racist who was a Democrat, and I'm the kind of asshole who is always talking about politics with strangers. I've talken about religion with wrong numbers. I'm so lonely...

Odd note I have observed: black people who don't like white people don't usually vote at all.

  6. By your own admission: All observations. And obsrvations are not facts. Your observations are not any more valid than mine.

You still haven't answered the question.

You're dancing and making allusions to logic.

Not questioning your opinion. Sounds fine to me. But it's not strong enough to call people "retarded" or pass it off as fact.

You make me laugh when you have the balls to actually claim Democrats/Liberals don't make racist comments.

Get the fuck out of here.

My turn: Pure ignorance of history if you think this.

  7. By the way, nice job of shifting the narrative in your favor.

  8. Show me a racist comment by an elected Democrat in the last ten years.

And it would help if you clearly defined what question you think I have not answered.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Not answering that. It wasn't my question.

My question is if a segment of a population sides with one of their own (like 91% with Obama) does it make them racist?

For example, here in Montreal in a suburb where Italians dominate, they always vote in an Italian liberal. Does it make them racist?

Only then will I answer yours.

  10. First of all, you have to understand what a Gallup poll asks. The first question is: are you a likely voter? If no, the interview ends. So the statistic is: 91% of black people who plan to vote approve of Obama.

Half of black people don't plan to vote. What does this mean? Only about 45% of black people actually seem to support Obama; most seem to not even be interested in registering to support him.

Why so much political apathy? Well, look at your choices: a pack of racists or a guy who talks a big game. Most black people over 18 did not vote for Obama, and many didn't vote at all.

So if you're asking, "Why do most black people love Obama?" then my answer has to be "They don't, but the black people who vote do." Why? Because people who vote subscribe to the proposed political dichotomy: it's Democrats or Republicans to American voters, and this also explains why 79% of "Democrats" approve and 75% of "liberals" approve, even though Obama is clearly not living up to his liberal promises.

Also, the fact that you equate approving of Obama with calling people of another race an offensive slur is amusing. It's always entertaining to watch people try to deflect attention away from racist Tea Partiers like Carl Palodino.

Yeah, pictures of an airplane aimed at black people with the caption, "Run Niggers Run" is clearly equatable to black people supporting a president who has faced unprecedented hate mongering from white supremecists.

  11. Was that so hard? I knew you could do it!

I will hold my end shortly.

  12. Also, my wife pointed out that about 13% of black men can't even vote due to voter restrictions imposed on prisoners, parolees, and probates. Sad.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That IS sad.

There's more to the 91% than meets the eye for sure.

Stats are what one makes of them.

Here are some links to democrats who made racial slurs. I really hate this counterfactual stuff on race.

But I'm biting on your claim. Keep in mind I don't know the context of each however it should be enough to disspell your claim.

I do know that here in Canada, the Liberal party (like FDR) interned Germans, Itaians, Japanese and Ukranian Canadians during WWII but that could have happened under the Conservatives/GOP too.

I interviewed a couple of internees and they went to their graves believing the liberals acted out of racism more than anything.

Race relations are extremely complex on so many levels.

Look. I'm just saying it's out there.

Beyond that, I just can't comment on American black relations. I can barely do it with the Canadian one.

  14. I stipulated in the last 10 years, because there was a sharp shift in the 1970's. Martin Luther King Jr. advocated on behalf of Republican progressives who were fighting to end Southern segregation, while Democrats were supporting it. It wasn't until the 1970's when Nixon courted the Southern white vote (known historically as "the Southern Strategy") that racists started flocking to the Republican party.

I would have said even in the 1980's, there was certainly no telling what way a racist would vote, but by the 90's, it was very clear that Republicans had cornered the market on the racist vote, and at this time black voters nearly universally (90% seems kind of low, frankly) Democrat. It was at this time that Republican nativist policy makers started getting elected.

Also, you might want to look into your own links, particular this last one. It seems relatively informed on this dynamic.

It's almost eery how the moment the Republicans ceased being "progressives" and started being "conservatives," they started harboring racists. How odd...

    ReplyDelete
  15. I don't disagree with the shift. Here in Canada "progressive" conservatives have given way to a more "right" strand of conservatism.

I know you specified 10 years - there have been 3 in the last couple alone.
