Any historian can tell you the past is quite malleable... just look at modern Christians who claim "America is a Christan nation" or people who deny the holocaust ever happened.
You can't undo what was done, but you can make sure no one knows about it, and that's much scarier. That implies we can do the right thing, but all it takes is a liar's determination to cancel it.
