Some 'Rona Random Thoughts

"These are stupid times". The Commentator.

"Aren't they all?

And let's quote someone who wasn't an idiot.

“In a democracy, someone who fails to get elected to office can always console himself with the thought that there was something not quite fair about it.”
― Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War

Ok. I'm just going to unleash without proofreading here.

Let's go.

-Once all this is settled, the United States is going to have to figure out a way to repurpose how it deals with China. Perhaps it's time to resurrect an updated version of containment used during the Cold War.

It's my position China is now clearly a global threat and is increasingly open about it. The Chinese pose an even greater threat, it can be said, than the Soviet Union. American hard power is one thing but it's gonna have to take all its wits and soft power to assuage a nation run by authoritarian communists with expansionist designs.

That China flouts just about any international agreement or treaty as well as be the holders of an abysmal human and animal rights record is not a matter of debate. It is.

We in the West will have to determine how we will move forward with American leadership.

My casting: China is Nurtse Rachet while America is The Dude.

It is my belief, in the long-run liberty, democracy and capital markets will prevail. In addition, I like the environmental and demographic profile of the USA over China which remains a paper tiger in my eyes.

We can do this.

-But it will be an uphill battle because there will still be useful idiots slurping CCP propaganda. Italy was on a good path under Salvini before he was undercut before he could institute his policies. Now the county is run by the centre-left and they're wasting no time signing deals with China.

It seems Italy is strangely betting on China to drum up business. This is a Faustian Deal filled with complicated and troublesome pit falls. I don't think Italy quite grasps what they're getting themselves into. The second something goes off or an Italian company or person criticizes China, they can expect a stern scolding and backlash laced with threats from the Chinese. And Italy is nowhere near able to stand up to China on its own. The Roman wolf is long gone while the Chinese tiger is roaring strong.

The episode with the NBA shows the precarious nature of dealing with China. As for Western businesses bending and kneeling to Chinese anger, this is increasingly angering the people.

The USA, India, and other allies have all expressed concerns by the latest Italian move and I don't blame them.

Wake up Italy. Ma verramente.

USA seems very proud they pushed through the biggest stimulus in world history (packed with cronyism of course).

There's nothing to be proud of. Politicians and opportunists are now going to try to capitalize on this. Maybe there's 'big business' in keeping the scare going?

Any remnants of limited government that may have been hanging on for dear life has just been thrown out the window.

I hope people are in the humouring stage of this mess. Right now, people are going along with requests from the authorities because we're in the middle of it and probably a couple of weeks away from any peaks. But beyond that point, if politicians and health officials 'shut down summer because in case', that's when we have to put on our big boy pants and let free people decide.

Unfortunately, I think we're entering an era of even more bail outs, crackdowns on civil liberties and big government. Hope I'm wrong.

The 3M mask spat will work itself out.

We're lucky we have a unique relationship with the USA (one of the most intricate in the world as Canada basically functions as a highly integrated and autonomous satellite) and could rely, in the end, on reliable trade with America.

I don't profess to know the details of the 3M/masks/Canada/Trump spat but on the surface, it is disappointing Trump would do this. We get it. America First. But at some point it wouldn't be a bad idea to at least not always look like a jerk. The President shouldn't be getting in the way of a deal between a company and a purchaser of a product even during a pandemic.

The bottom line is we all trade with each other and sparking arguments like this is unproductive.

****

The one that should concern us is what Health Minister Patty Hajdu said today about not having proof China is lying.

If this is the extent of their leadership acumen and ability to read other countries, then we're in trouble. A more prime example of a useful idiot you don't get.

In fact, the entire Liberal establishment are useful idiots.

Why are they walking on egg shells around China?

This is the question.

*****

Canadian health officials say you don't need masks. That means use them.

****

If anything, I hope people are recognizing just how much we gave up to China. This should galvanize people into demanding we revert, rethink and reinvigorate our respective national economies.

-Notice people who want complete shut down are the wealthy and people who can weather the storm. I would caution we don't cede too much power to doctors. Doctors will obviously push for a hyper precautionary principle because their goal is to save people. Their mandate doesn't stretch beyond that. This is why we need enlightened and wise leadership to steer the entire society away from a self-induced catastrophe. The flattening of the curve is one thing (and perhaps even over-rated) but the flattening of the economy? That will have all kinds of potentially devastating consequences. The collateral damage, that is, could lead to the cure being worse than the disease.

Among them permanent closures and lost jobs and all the externalities that go with it from broken families, bankruptcies and suicides. To say nothing of the immeasurably impact of stress on millions of people. Stress kills as we know.

Here's an article that keeps on this lane into further detail.

I'm one of those people who have been accused of not understanding this is for mankind. I counter that the economy IS mankind.

And I just don't see how this is an existential threat. It's a serious one that demands attention and I'm far from interested in challenging the authorities here but I do think it's essential for us to keep questioning and thinking here. You can't just blindly follow orders.

- Under the Liberals, they've intensely increased spending and if the shut down persists, it can further exacerbate the debt. We just might have to set up a GoFundMe page for Canada.

-Speaking of empty 'flattening' terms, we're all essential services now. If one thing this is showing me, we're all intricately interconnected.

-Government will learn, if they haven't already, you can't control Adam Smith's :invisible hand". It will have final say and slap you in the face.

-Whole lot of faulty comparisons going on. For example, what happened in Italy isn't necessarily going to happen in England or elsewhere for a whole pack of reasons. I read an article in The Guardian where a documentarian Francesca (?) Melandri warned that the English should be worried.

This is a people who kept calm and carried on while the Blitzkrieg by the Satan and the Nazis rained and reigned upon London. I think, even though the country seems to have lost some of its verve and nerve in recent years falling to SJW rubbish, they'll be fine.

- To expand, L.A. isn't NYC. And NYC is not USA. Heck, NYC isn't even upstate NY. Every place and region has its own set of circumstances and factors faced. There is no one-size fits all solution.

-China sending masks. This is a PR stunt. I'd rather take my chances without one than use anything defective made in China.

-NY cops: Stop and I ain't frisking! He Gots Da Rona!

-I don't think people who buy how China projects itself outwardly, realize what they do inwardly. This is a communist regime that would think nothing of wiping out an entire village if it meant stomping out a virus or preserving their 'honour'. It's a despicable government.

-Keep in mind. It's all politics and theater. Especially in the USA because it's an election year. As for Trudeau, he's angling for a hook to mark his legacy. I don't know what it is but if he was forced to close down air travel I don't think this pleased him. In his mind, external forces made him take this decision and he's gonna make good on it for people treated in this way.

Do not think for one second the Democrats or progressives are ghoulishly welcoming this crisis. After all, they coined the term 'never let a crisis go to waste'. And this one is just to juicy to ignore. It gives them the chance to achieve all their wildest, authoritarian wet dreams.

-The U.S. issues a warrant for the arrest of Maduro. The criminal pirate who raped and pillaged Venezuela.

- On one end, the FDA has been loosening regulations but on the other it hasn't. Do not under estimate the role of the bureaucracy in any fault here.

That aside, I'm tired of all the lame finger pointing and constant bashing. It's unproductive and pathetic.

- Around here people are putting up rainbows on windows saying 'it will get better'. NO IT WON'T!

-Let me expand on Melandri (read it for yourself. Maybe I'm missing the point) from on top. She should go write for The Edgar Allen Poe Society.

Frankl wrote one of the most important (mostly unread) books in the 20th century. He tried to rationalize the systematic genocide of humans in WW2. As he described the unspeakable horrors and (REAL threat of death), he explained how even under those conditions man is able to rise above pure, irrational evil.

This chick is asking you to bow down to your inner pessimism. She's a faux-existentialist in my humble opinion.

The Guardian is another one making sure we all see the fear beyond.

The new warning is 'things will never be normal again'. Really? This is as close to nihilism masquerading as realism as one can get. How we react is fully in our hands and head. We can make it however we want. I choose to believe the human spirit will prevail.

We went through The plague of Justinian, The Bubonic Plague (which took Europe two centuries to recover from and Florence double that!), The Hundred Years' War, Two Great Wars, the greatest genocide in human histor, Spanish Flu (where the origins remain a mystery),the Great Depression, 1970s hyper-inflation, three major market crashes in 1929, 1987 and 2008, a 2000 tech bubble,  the Cold War, and 9/11 and double stuff Oreo. Every single one of those threatened us to varying degrees than this virus. Shit, Italy itself has gone through relentless events or rape, conquering, pestilence, poverty and pillaging over the centuries. Of course civilization changes but don't tell me this pandemic comes remotely close to what we've experienced in the past. It's an insult to those who went through worse.

The main driver of the concern is the unknown. Like the Universe. Or a H.P. Lovecraft nightmare.

Normal is what we'll make of it. We shouldn't react like we did after 9/11 based on pure statistics. Fear of the unknown shouldn't lead to something equivalent in health to The Patriot Act. I know people believe it works but it comes at a massive cost to civil liberties and resources.  The notion of 'global warming' (which isn't even a thing anymore even within the eco-totalitarian ranks) will exacerbate this and is not rooted in certainty. It just isn't. It's a theory. Perhaps one in which has some validity but we don't know. We don't. This is a casual correlation we shouldn't bet on. Nor should it fool us into a cause and effect scenario.

Earth and the universe is one violent entity. I don't think we ponder this enough. That we exist in such relative luxury is an achievement of beyond belief.

We cheat death every single hour of our lives. From car accidents to meteors (the size of a small state in some cases) that due to atmospheric forces peter out turning to a pebble by the time it crashes on earth - usually somewhere in Kansas. But one of these days Alice....to the moon! It's gonna get us.

Organisms like bacteria so small threaten us at every turn. Do we let the risk stop us? Of course not. That's what it means to be human endowed with free will and free thought.

I also don't like her projecting her 'neo-neo-realism' onto Britons. They're a completely different culture from Italians - better organized and more deferent to authority.

The Guardian is progressive so a little more melancholy Melandri and less opulent optimism I guess is the narrative they must run with.

I prefer the term 'we'll adjust'.

If there's no hope and positivity, then we're useless.

My prediction? Based on history and my suspicion of how this is being reported? Things will be normal again.

It's our response on a state level (e.g justifying coercive health policies) that could jeopardize this not the people or the virus itself.

Just my 'deux cents'.
