Sometimes they say it takes a bully to deal with a bully. That it takes the right kind of asshole to clean shit up.
That's what Trump represents.
Behind the noise and bluffing lies an actual thought process and tactics.
What feels like incoherence may in fact be a deliberate ploy to get results.
We see this in varying degrees in business all the time. Corporations or SME's both deal with gamesmanship. I know I do. It's the nature of the beast.
That Mexico responded twice - the first being the free trade deal - to Trump's threats is indicative of one country telling another 'we see what you're doing and we're calling you out'. Yes, it's not comfortable to see especially if you're a moderate sort of voter but one can't deny it can be effective. Trump went for the jugular in dealing with the migrant crisis. There have been reports that this whole thing is a manufactured and organized crisis (organized chaos?) and cutting through to get to the source has made one thing clear. Mexico has been complicit and not doing its job in securing their own borders with Central America.
Mexico wouldn't play for the New England Patriots I can tell you that.
Trump did what a lot of blunt people do in order to get what they want: Hit 'em in the pockets.
He threatened Mexico with tariffs in different areas of industry.
Mexico pulled off their calculators, carried their ones, and realized 'the gringo is crazy but we can't afford this!'
And so.....they agreed to do their part in helping the United States with this issue.
Now, Congress - who are the ultimate example of good for noting slouches - has to step up once and for all. Democrats have been obscenely hypocritical and downright irresponsible on immigration reform. Time for them to man up and spare Americans their faux-morality tales.
They don't give a shit about the human calculus; they care about votes.
Moving on to China. Same thing minus immigration.
China has been a bully on the international trade scene for decades now. They constantly flout WTO rules, engage in corporate espionage and manipulate treasury markets for their benefit.
The United States (and the EU) have inexplicably refused to flex their muscle over the years choosing to simply take China to WTO court (where they generally prevail over the Chinese).
Trump, though, wants to equalize the terms as he sees it.
So he used the same tactics. Of course, this demands a little more nuance and show of will since China is an ancient land with a formed mind set and gigantic economy looking to increase its influence in world affairs.
It's a power but....it's not as powerful as one may think it can be argued. The West made this mistake long ago. When it (mostly England) forced China through its (chauvinistic?) 'Open Door Policy' in the 19th century, it was quickly discovered behind the projected image of strength lay a weak and poor country.
I'm not saying this is the case now but China has huge demographic and environmental issues that the Americans (and the EU) do not have.
The USA is a highly mature, developed, and innovate social and economic gargantuan entity that has reached its status organically. This is why this blog always bet on the U.S..
Trump knows this. As his predecessors likely did.
It's just that he's willing to pinch China's nipples and his betting they'll flinch.
In a nut shell, Trump just showed through Mexico and China one basic reality jolting them into reality:
You need us more than we need you.
