In the very 'duh' category, Crosby was named captain of Team Canada. Pundits were wasting air time wondering who was going to be captain; Crosby or Toews? It was a no-brainer from the get-go in my opinion. Toews is an excellent hockey player but Crosby is Canada's supreme player. Suggesting it should be Toews, while not a crazy notion, is over-thinking on the part of talking-heads. Other than that, notice two players in the list of selected top scorers not going to the Olympics. Thornton is debatable despite his 52 points so I kinda get the thinking there, though I still think it's nuts to leave off a guy with that size and play-making ability. You can never have enough of those but I think the brain-trust opted for some pure scorers like his team-mate Marleau. The omission I think most people are disappointed with is Martin St. Louis. I can't see how they could justify leaving him out. Already the list of players who didn't make the cut is impressive (I already went over the list that includes Seabrook, Giroux, Neal, Lucic, Couture, Hall, Boyle and a few others) and in a country with so much depth (I see this with Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Italy in soccer and the USA in basketball all the time), it's bound to happen but St. Louis belonged. You know, they talk of 'loyalty' in the case of Nash's selection. I never quite understood that thinking since it suggests putting the subjective ahead of the objective. St. Louis was never given a chance to be 'loyal' and in any event he has always answered the call whenever his country called (World Championships). I guess loyalty is a some of the time thing only reserved for some players?
