Dear CAQ,
I thoroughly despise the Parti Quebecois for numerous reasons but the tabling of Bill 14 is so shocking it leaves be dejected as a free standing citizen in Canada. It's a law so despicable, mean-spirited and punitive it will only solidify Quebec's stagnant-sclerosis not just economically but culturally as well.
The CAQ MUST defeat this bill. It's the only right thing to do. If we truly are an open and tolerant society, we would. We mustn't let reactionary forces drive our public policy. It's bad and regressive policy.
In their minds, they're "protecting" Quebec when they're doing nothing of the sort. They're using punitive measures against others to promote another group of people. In any other place, this is called state-sanctioned discrimination of the highest order. Quebec is receiving failing grades in the hall of international opinion with just and proper cause.
We should be embarrassed and ashamed. We have absolutely no excuse or justification for our behavior now.
Mr. Legault. You asserted in a debate during the election that Quebec was a laggard society when compared to other jurisdictions on the continent. I agreed with this assertion and you deserved praise for having the courage to mention this. If we don't face our problems honestly we can never move to repair them.
However, it will be a disappointing display of hypocrisy and perhaps ignorance to support Bill 14 which is the type of mentality that keeps us a "have-not" and lagging province and jurisdiction.
The PQ's mindset is one built for losers.
Do you want Quebec to win? I do. That's why I welcomed the CAQ onto the political landscape. However, I reserved my vote to see, when push comes to shove, if the CAQ would respect me as a free standing citizen, free to live my life in peace. Making me a second-class citizen in my own home where I pay taxes is an outrage of unacceptable proportions.
You or the PQ have no right to impose your will on me and my community.
Quebec and Canada for that matter, I know, has no heritage or literature on what liberty means. I must import these ideals from the United States. A nation that in all its imperfections, challenges its soul on a daily basis in search of a just society.
Quebec is far, FAR from this honorable journey.
So far, my vote is not in the hands of the CAQ.
I will be watching the events unfolds.
Should Bill 14 be enacted - in any form - this will not be a showcase in "democratic compromise." It will cement Quebec's reputation as an insecure , intolerant and immature political society. It will signal that were are only welcome on another persons terms. This I cannot accept or condone. I am not 30% less or more a citizen than my French-Canadian compatriot. We are equals and our laws should never under any circumstance break this hallowed covenant.
I will divest and move my family from this place if need be. I don't want to be part of a society that would have the government treat people in this way. I don't do it to others and certainly won't tolerate it from a political party I don't respect.
Quebec wants respect.
Go earn it.
The decision is up to you and the CAQ, Mr. Legault.
I think deep in all our hearts, we know Bill 14 is just plain wrong and unjust. Perhaps immoral.
Regards,
The Commentator
