"Mexico As A Viable Country Is Uncertain"

Mexico is an ailing nation. The drug cartels threaten its very existence. Mexico's situation is grave.

The importance of Mexico is directly connected to American security matters. The last thing President Obama needed was a Mexican state heading for failed-state status.

How will the United States deal with this?

Were Dubbya still at the helm he would probably accelerate the building of the fence then bomb the place into oblivion.
Obama will most likely consult with Calderon only to find out that the whole place is totally corrupt and beyond redemption. This morning a friend of mine currently in Mexico wrote that he had twice been intercepted by police officers clearly looking for a bribe to forget imaginary traffic violations. My brother experienced the same thing some 5o years ago. Nihil nove sub sole.

  2. My friend goes to Mexico often because his fiance is Mexican. The stories he comes back with is stunning. It just may be beyond redemption.

I could see a day when America simply swallows it up for security reasons. The Americans can't have a failed state on their border. That would invite too many problems.

What do you mean 'swallow up'? Have you guys from more developed North America become cannibalistic?
    ;-)

One has not to forget, though, that Eastern Europe is sinking because of America's bad financial behaviours, just to name something close to Italy. All weak nations of earth seem to suffer a lot for this America generated crisis.

Wonder if Mexico's problems are related to that as well.

As far as Latin America terrible corruption, that is hard to deny.

Just playing the rompiballe for the sake of it :-)

MoR, Mexico was in deep doodoo long before the «crisis» despite it's oil reserves and warm climate. Corruption down there is away of life as it is in several other places. That is one situation the Americans, or USAers as I prefer to say, are not to blame for.
I prefer USAers to «Americans» because three countries share North America:Canada, Mexico and the United States of America. For USAers to call themselves Americans is sheer imperialism since it kind of cannibalise the two other populations.

Well, Paul, ok. I had commented to kick off some debate. Parfois il faut provoquer un peu. D'ailleurs lui, le Commentador, fait la même chose avec moi et les Romains ne doivent pas être seconds à personne :-)

“It kind of cannibalise the two other populations.” Ah ah, I had thought something like that.

It is though a great pity that Mexico is like that, I really mean it.

  7. Ha. Rompiballe is a word we use a lot!Yes, I like to spark debate. I can be a rompiballe too.

For those of you wondering, rompiballe means to break balls. And can be used as a metaphor for "stirring things."

Paul is spot on: Mexico was always incorrigible. South American nationalists do a lot of bantering blaming U.S. hegemony for their ills to mask their own failures. It's a lot like how Arab governments blame the U.S. for their problems.

The buck stops not with the U.S. but with those governments (kleptocracies in the Middle-East) and dictators.

Commentator, ton français est certainement plus fort que mon italien. Je crois que c'est un gros plus de pouvoir communiquer dans plus d'une langue.

Some Southern parts of Italy are also beyond redemption. Fortunately other parts of the country are fine. Although, on the whole, this last crisis has shown in my view that the big world centres of economical power are probably beyond redemption as well. I don't know why I'm saying this and whether this is true or not. Maybe I got up this morning and I found these gloomy weather

  12. I remain more positive. While there's no doubt Obama is introducing a European welfare state, there remains marked differences between the New and Old worlds.

    America isn't Europe...yet.
