McDonald's Serves (Excuse The Pun) A Practical Purpose In The Economy

As McDonald's continues to be targeted by protestors likely organized by unions like the SEIU, I feel compelled to defend McDonald's.

Never mind about the concept of minimum wage (Switzerland doesn't have one. Just saying) is illogical and impractical that fucks young people out of entry level jobs needed to gain experience. Never mind about the concepts of wages and pricing.

If you're 28 and have been working at McDonald's for five years at minimum wage. That's on you buddy. McDonald's cost structure is built on a moving wage at the low levels. It's meant to introduce young people into the world of employment.

The beauty of McDonald's, and this was known when I was growing up, is it has an outstanding job training program for workers. It provides a base of knowledge widely recognized by the labour force. If you had McDonald's on your resume, that was gold. Just like having worked at the Royal Bank of Canada has a certain prestige among banks.

That's the whole point. It's a stepping stone. McDonald's provides a chance for its workers to move up the ladder and even become franchise owners. There are very little great corporations out there that have this model refined like they do. If you're smart and ambitious you know how to leverage this advantage.

I know someone who is considered mentally challenged who began working at McDonald's over 20 years ago.

He now owns one.

Imagine that.

But you hardly hear about those stories anymore. Back in the day, McDonald's had fast, efficient, cordial service second to none. I've detected a slight erosion. And seeing these self-entitled idiots protest, I'm not surprised because I'm gonna guess they're low-quality workers.

It's hard to make ends meet on $7 an hour? Look in the mirror. McDonald's or any other company for that matter is not there to subsidize your life.

As for the health aspect of the food, yes, it's not healthy but it's not horrible either. The cold hard fact and truth is we've never been healthier. I tend to ignore the doom and gloom about questionable health stories (and climate) because the big picture has never been better.

If the West falls, it'll be more because of the climate of anti-intellectual intolerance and hyper-sensitive paternalism that's blanketing policy across the continent and less about Big Mac's.
