Where's Your Library Card?

Came across a podcast about Ancient Libraries and Libarii at Historytimes.com.

We tend to under estimate the importance of libraries in society. So I snooped around for more information about libraries. This link talks about "The 7 Most Impressive Libraries Throughout History." Naturally, Alexandria is included as are the Library of Congress, Celsus and Sankore.

Of course, it's not restricted to these as the world (from Persia to Athens to Rome; from Islam to the Middle Ages in Europe) has had its share of famous and/or important libraries.

I currently have The Grande Bibliothèque du Québec's card. Previously I held the Val-David Library's one and before that Montreal North's. As a student I had Montreal's and U de M., as an MILR member I also have all McGill's library access. However my own private book shelves are well furnished and answer much of my needs. The Internet is also a rich resource when you sort out the thrash.

  3. Hm. Dunno.

Yeah, the internet plus a private book/periodicals/etc. collection have made the library less convenient to some.

  4. I would not say "less convenient", maybe less necessary, because it is most convenient to know that you will find there things that you will never have in your home or only partially on the Net.

  5. I say less convenient because you literally have info. at your fingertips without moving.

  6. The blog post you refer to seems a bit Anglo-Saxon centric. It forgets the Vatican Library, one of the oldest in the world. With its most precious 75,000 codices from throughout history it is probably unparalleled, at least as for ancient books.

  7. My original intent was to do do something more in depth but taking on such a topic in the summer is not a great idea. Better this than nothing.

Yes, it is odd to omit the Vatican now that you mention it.

  8. Of course I was referring to that post, not to yours, which is a very good post and linking to good information.
