Good afternoon Mister Reagan. Toronto's mayor seems bent on outlasting the strikers. Yesterday some union members, a few hundred it seems, were asking the mayor to allow them to go back to work. Of course he can't do that. I wonder where those guys were when the strike vote was held? I know when our guys struck each time several would come to my office and ask to bring work home since they opposed the strike and wanted to keep looking after their cases. When I asked if they were at the vote, they invariably said no. I had to tell them well next time be there and vote no. Of course I could not, however sympathtic I may have been, allow them to scab, I would have put them at risk and made myself liable to legal procedures. In Canada Texas style cowboy behaviour does not fly easily.
I have little patience for such tactics - like the SAQ when they went on strike during the holidays a few years back. What annoyed me was this: I would have loved to see what the free market would pay these people. I had no choice because the government runs its own alcohol racket. I could have voiced my opinion by taking my money elsewhere. Instead, it's a monopoly and it stinks.
It's too bad privatization has become a pejorative. Moreover, strangely connected to one person in Reagan.

I agree private interest in a responsible society isn't bad. The key word here is "responsible". As a whole, we are for ever less responsible and call on the governement for everything. Another problem is the need for public services in some areas such as urban sanitation, urban public transport and water works and electricity. Where these things have been privatized they have become very expensive for the ordinary Joe. When an entrepreneur gets into something, it's to make money and that is perfectly legitimate. However, the cost of these types of services has to be born by the larger public, not just the users otherwise we face hardships worse than the occasional strike. As for the SAQ I agree with you that some competition would be good.
