Saturday I participate in a half-marathon in Vermont. Naturally, the weather is going to sink. Rain, slush, cold.
My goal was to run it inside 1 hour and 45 minutes but with the weather that might prove a challenge. I don't know. I've been running at 1 hour 36-39 minutes in training though.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to run for six days choosing instead to rest my calf. In fact, I simply want to avoid injuries and did have to deal with a migraine for a couple of days. I'm vulnerable to vertigo so health realities did have an impact in my deciding to load up on carbs and rest the week.
I know it's kinda up to the runner whether training up until race day or taking days off is beneficial. If I had my way, I would have run maybe two more times but I doubt it would have made a difference on my time at this point.
I managed 44 runs since January 1. I aimed to run 50 times but again, was sidetracked with an illness for 10 days back in February and was in New York for three days in March. Nor was I strict with my diet along the way. I still enjoyed my wine and espresso.
A friend of mine from Boston (now living here and regretting it as he watches the PQ act like complete buffoons. Funny. He's a well informed, intelligent liberal and up until recently saw Quebec's language laws and issues as but a mere nuisance. He felt it Montreal was still a good place to be. Alas, he's come to adjust his thinking a little in lieu of all that's gone on. Not exactly a raw-raw-raw American, even he concedes nothing like what Quebec does happens in the States, "Quebec is more fucked up than the U.S. at the moment"as he summed it. Same for another American I may do business with. It's just too toxic for their taste. They can spot prejudicial politics from a mile away and that's all the PQ are about. They know their kids have no shot here...so...I digress) suggested I spit on a few lazy-ass socialist Vermonters along the path. Just an inside joke between he and I given my position on certain issues and his liberal sensibilities.
What I'm trying to say is I may not post for a couple of days.

Practice Can Help Reach Perfection
I was thinking about practice for some reason earlier.
Here's the thing. Practice matters.
It matters more than you or people like Allen Iverson (see famous practice rant here) can or could ever imagine. Maybe it explains in part Iverson was never part of a championship team or really matured as a pro athlete.
ALL champions play hard during games. And every single champion has one common defining feature and characteristic they ALL share. The took practice seriously.
Mike Bossy went to my high school long before I attended but it was well known he spent hours upon hours shooting the puck at the rink before, after and probably during school hours. Bossy of course is now regarded to be the "purist" goal scorer in NHL history. Not a bad tag considering the likes of Maurice Richard, Gordie Howe, Bobby and Brett Hull, Mario Lemieux and of course Wayne Gretzky. 99 was all about practice. He was the greatest player ever and was the first one on the ice, last one off.

Focus on the ACTION. Anyway, it's a tactic I deal with a work all the time. I have to remind my young workers of the errors of this logic. It can mess them up. Don't argue like a 'salam.'
It is intended to distract from the point that NYU hired a murderer to teach at their school. Now, one can debate if the person paid their debt to society and according to the law they did. However, it is quite a "louche" (weak) move on the part of NYU.

I'd like to address something here. It's directed at intelligent, mild-mannered Quebecers; not nationalists. Nationalists of all stripes can go suck an elk's scrotum.
The issue, it must be repeated and can't be so enough, is not whether Quebec has the right or duty to protect its language.
What's not sinking in the head of people and what is completely unacceptable in a free, pluralist society is the use of PUNITIVE measures to protect one culture at the expense of another.
I don't know what sort of mind can think or deem it appropriate that it's appropriate to fine a person for what amounts to freedom of expression. You must speak this and write this 30% larger etc. It's insidious, infantile and without decorum or respect. Small minded behavior from a small population demands, well, small minded treatment.
Quebec is declaring a war on language, yes, but it's also a war on freedom of expression it must understand. A war on itself.
French-Quebec nationalists object to be called small-minded and xenophobic but that's what they are. Change the idiot mentality and perhaps big people will take them seriously.
I read often language intolerance takes place in Canada - and for shame. It boggles my mind how petty we can be. I object to it and reject it outright. I stand for equal rights for ALL.
However, Quebec has taken it a step further. A step no jurisdiction has taken.
Now. Other places can look to here and say, "well, tit for tat" or "well, we're not going that route." So far, the latter is fortunately prevailing.
Infuriating in all this is I have to watch Quebec legislate laws that effectively create two-tiers of classes of citizens and must keep quiet about it.
On that front a big "fuck you" to all Quebecois dimwits who think this.
I'm currently reading a book about Rome. In it, it discusses how the majstic artist Raphael and the Renaissance thinker Baldassare Castiglione rummaged through the ruins of Ancient Rome in search of classical ideas and art like a couple of scavengers.
They wrote a report (well, it's strongly assumed Castiglione was a part of the writing), about Rome's decline. In it, and among other things, they argued it wasn't the Goths or Vandals or other invading tribes that ruined Rome.
It was the Romans themselves in all their decadence that did it.
And so it is in Quebec. It's not English or 'les autres' the enemy. They're just the strawman to a larger problem. It's the Quebecers themselves who threaten Quebec as they see it. How else to describe their behavior?
It seems others have to pay for their shortcomings and weaknesses.

Thatcher and Reagan. Both perhaps are over stated these days but one can't deny the power of their leadership skills and personalities. They rose and seized control of the moment. I think the overall message was correct, whether they implemented it appropriately or without contradiction is another matter. There's a significant amount of literature on their governance.
Currently, there is no Thatcher or Reagan on the North American or European landscape. For some, on the left of course, that's a good thing!
