Our Compassionate Health System

For all you people who defend the government's "compassionate" health care system, here's another story I offer. My grandfather recently had a stroke and was admitted to Notre-Dame hospital. He's extremely ill but will live.

The care, in our view, has been less than stellar. He feels like he's being poorly treated. Of course he is, with all this talk about needing to "kill" people, tax sodas and whatever, we're now being conditioned to believe we're a burden in an inefficient system.

But hey, at least we have it. So shut up!

Anyway.

We're always told nurses are over worked, over tired. And this is true. But it doesn't excuse not being able to offer basic and respectful care.

Now he's trapped. It's not like we can go to another hospital. So we had to hire a private nurse to watch over him over night.

How ironic! Within the public system, we have to use a private service. Evil!

OECD study after OECD study, we see Canada's public health system ranks at the bottom of the heap. We are not innovators but laggards. Yet, we still see articles by apologists for the system telling us it's all "right-wing Fraser Institute" fear mongering.

You don't need to read about it. You just have to witness the system first hand to know it has major problems.

Meh.

At least, we're not American.

Winks.

  1. Tax cuts, putting prematurely thousands of peope to pasture to reach the sacrosanct deficit zero and establishing stringent quotas on formation of new nurses and doctors have gutted our health system. Repairing it will require years.
The collective agreements will have to be reviewed and made more supple to avoid 3 people doing the job of one thus making the system more efficient. As it is when a department is short of staff you can't move people to alleviate the situation.
At any rate we will have to reinvest people and money in the system...and that calls either for printing money (not desirable) or having a sensible tax base to work with.

  2. All what you say makes sense.

Question is, can we make it happen?

I seriously doubt it at this point.

  3. It's a question of civic responsibility and political courage, I'm afraid we, as a people, lack both.

  4. Well, Paul I think you're right - sadly. It's a message I try to hammer home over at Neil's - albeit clumsily.

Civic responsibility and leadership: Two things we need to work on.

How anyone can remotely suggest our system is amazing and should be copied by the U.S. is beyond my ability to comprehend.

  5. An almost working system is better than no system at all. Here, regardless of means, we can still get some minimal care. Down there if you can not show money or an insurance card, unless you are totally destitute, you get nothing but a death certificate...if someone can pay for it.

  6. I dunno if it's more of a myth or reality that a hospital would throw someone out on the street. I'm guessing there's more to the story. Aren't HMO's state run and there to serve all Americans?

Only an American can answer this so if you're American please...enlighten.
