That Didn't Take Long

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!

***

Justin 'My father said' Trudeau didn't back the Michael Ignatieff camp opting for Gerard Kennedy who lost last night. Recall he said Ignatieff "lacked wisdom." Not surprising some are angling for him to be the next leader of the party soon or down the line.

Personally, he's not the answer. He has the same, tired, Canadian liberal messeage. But that's me.

Conflicting Purging Of The American Soul And Justice

The killing of Osama has had quite an effect on Americans. Well, the ones at sports games anyway.

I don't think you could fake these images if you tried.

Nonetheless, while I don't want to overplay his killing, I do think there's nothing wrong in their sense of pride for bringing the prick to justice, but the celebrating is a bit weird.

***

There were reports they were using a woman as a human shield as the Seals wiped the suckers out. Turns out, it was Osama doing it. A true warrior until the end.

***

Speaking of the Navy Seals, I was reading the story on how they executed - excuse the pun - the plan. Cool stuff. Right out of the movies. Or is it right out of real life? I smell a movie coming. Props to the President for going with special-ops for this. High risk, high rewards.

The Playboy Mummy

Imagine that.

You know, once upon a time, when our community bounds were strong and civil, a neighbour would have found Yvette Vickers much sooner.

We've become more diconnected and even disenchanted with one another.

We Did What?

Man, this is going to be interesting.

It's ok, Layton will blame the Tories for his decision to nominate people with so little experience - four McGill students suddenly will be part of the opposition.

Nothing beats Ruth Ellen Brosseau, an assistant manager in a pub who was put on a ballot in a French-speaking riding even though she can barely speak the language. She did what any dedicated professional does in such matters. Rather than campaign and build credibility, she split for Vegas.

And won!

*Shakes head*

As bad as the Liberals are, the NDP are rank amateurs.

I hope they prove me wrong.

***

Back to Quebec electing the NDP. The problem is that despite the 102 seats, the Conservatives how more power than before and the NDP can't threaten them with a coalition thus limiting what they can possibly do. In many ways, it's a symbolic election in that Quebec gets large representation as official opposition.

***

You know, I just realized that most of the time I never had an MP I supported. My vote always went to the party but the candidate in my riding was usually Bloc. In other words, I was NEVER represented.

Some system.

No wonder there's a democratic deficit.

Healthy Diet In Jeopardy?

In a discussion about whether or not the United States is in decline usually encompasses metrics like demography, economic trends and growth and innovation. However, someone pointed to me something we may be overlooking: Diet.

Her claim that in the West in general (don't tell that to the French or Italians), diet is in decline given the source of our food is often questionable. From sugar content, to gluten to corn products to all sorts of other preservatives and ingredients, we're likely killing our body. People point to the rise of cancer as "proof" but as I posted a while back, cancer rates as a whole across the board have been stable for the past 50 years in North America.

The other alleged problem is the link between bad food with autism and allergies which seemingly are on the rise.

Although, we're ironically living longer than we ever have.

Poor diet and no exercise means less energy and more sloths in society. This can manifest itself into poor academics and a weak military.

Thoughts?

Which made me wonder as I cruised around an organic store. If "mainstream" food being sold through grocery stores are bad for us the alternative, we're told, is organic food.  Or at least food produced as it was "meant" to be eaten: Fresh from the freshest sources.

We often hear about how education and health are a "right" that should be universally available to all. What about food? What's to stop in the future advocacy groups and the government from making organic food a public service? After all, organic food is too expensive for the under privileged. Private enterprise, it is believed (though I have my reservations about this argument), would never cater to the poor (although stores like Dollarama do exactly that for basic items). Therefore, it is up to the state to make sure people are eating right.

Actually, I don't think this new "value" is not too far off from entering our political discourse. It's already begun with the silly war on fast food chains.

Election Thoughts; NDP Hype And Frivolous Bob Rae

Because you asked I offer my useless but charming opinion on what transpired last night.

The Conservatives won 167 seats easily surpassing the 155 seats needed to form a majority government.

To say it was interesting goes without saying. For you Americanos reading, picture Ralph Nader coming in second in your election to understand what the NDP as official opposition means.

So. Now the NDP suddenly find themselves in the middle of power for the first time in its history.  "What? You mean I have to actually explain and justify my promises, now?"

How they will perform is anyone's guess. I imagine some of their phone calls went a little like: "Hi Mom, I'm on TV!" and "Cancel that trip to Ogunquit I have to work!" Again, for you Yanks, Ocunquit is a popular destination for Quebecers.

***

The new buzzword this election cycle is "cooperation." Every election, we learn a new word like an espisode from fricken Sesame Street. Can you say, "eviction?"

***

It has been espoused the new conservative-socialism dichotomy in parliament will function better than most think. Perhaps. However, there's a little wrinkle in that belief. The reality is despite its impressive meteoric rise to opposition, most of the NDP seats (58 in total) came from Quebec all at the expense of the Bloc Quebecois (more on those clowns later). They capitalized more on a "protest" vote than their actually policies. People did vote either strategically or with their emotions but not out of conviction or based on issues.

Quebec has given NDP a hold on power they could never have imagined. For the province, it makes more sense to vote for a party that actually can form an opposition. Better to go with a socialist national party than a regional separatist one as the thought went.

It's now a double-edge sword for thr NDP. As a true national party (which is good for Quebec given they actually have a voice as opposed to a bunch of seperatists sitting throwing useless, rhetorical stones in Parliament), they may find themselves naturally pandering to Quebec's needs.

Strategically, it was simple: People were fed up with the pointlessness of the Bloc Quebecois - the party founded by Lucien Bouchard. In fact, it was an opening for Quebecers - thoroughly sickened by the fact a separatist party earning a Federal paycheck and pension on their dime - to skin them alive.

***

I mentioned the NDP garnered 58 seats in Quebec but only 44 (22 in Ontario) in the rest of Canada. In Saskatchewan, the spiritual NDP flatland - they managed no seats at all.

The Conservatives on the other hand conquered British Columbia and Alberta and left Quebec to the wolves.

The Liberals, for their part, roamed around the country asking people if they can you spare a nickel for their thoughts.

Can you spell regional split?

We'll see how this plays out.

***

I don't trust the NDP won't pander to nationalists. After all, I wouldn't be surprised if some of their MP's elected are soft nationalists or even separatists themselves.

***

Elizabeth May won the first ever seat for the Green party. Canada's Green movement is in its infancy stage. Surprising, no?

***

About 62% of Canadian voted. Voter turn out in tiny PEI (pop. c. 130 000) exceeded 70%.

***

As for the Bloc Quebecois, Good riddance. It bothered me to no end to have listen to them whine about Canada while earning a cheque from Ottawa. Duceppe's entire strategy was to go to the rest of Canada to provoke and then go back to Quebec and say, "See, what they said about you!" It was such a lame game.

Buh-bye.
***

Last but not least, I listened to Liberal Bob Rae after winning his seat somewhere in Ontario. They say conservatives feed on ignorance, but liberals say stupid things too in an effort to win support.

I don't know when the crappy logic of "60% of Canadians didn't vote for Harper ergo he doesn't have a true majority and moral right to govern as he wishes" crept into the country's political vernacular, but it's a shameful one rooted in political ignorance. I even remember websites going up yapping on about "2/3 of Canadians didn't vote Harper."

Bunch of history deficient drones I must politely say.

Rae's own Liberals won the election with 37% of the popular vote in 2004. In 2000, the Liberals won 41% thanks to the right splitting itself between the Canadian Alliance and PC who got 38% of the vote.

In both elections, 60% of Canadians didn't vote Liberal! In fact, it was the case in the 1990s as well when Chretien dominated the landscape with his majorities.

Obviously, when Harper was elected they decided to move the goal posts and speak gibberish.

60% of the population not voting for a governing party is the norm Makes perfect sense with three major parties in the mix and until last night a regional block from a big province. To say nothing of fringe parties and indepdendents who manage to get votes .

Naturally, it's rare a government wins more than 50%. And in the pre-war era, it was generally a 50/50 split between the Conservatives and Liberals.

Only TWO parties have ever won more of the popular vote than the other parties combined and that was in 1958, again with the Conservatives under Diefenbaker and the Liberals in 1953.

It has happened where a party wins an election with less of a popular vote than its opposition but this is not the case with Harper. His percentages are roughly in line with historical averages. Actually, given the amount of parties on the ballots, I'd say hitting close to 40% is pretty damn good.

So for Bob Rae to repeat the ignorant claim says two things about him: Either he's a clown-idiot (which I doubt) or he's being coy in deceiving the electorate banking they won't fact check his claim. I don't know which is worse.

The latter is likely but it shows he's no different than any politician in their attempt to prey on the ignorant.

Let the Liberals wallow in nothingness for crap like this.

God Is Not Funny

In both my home and work ridings, the NDP have won.

Ugh.

More wagging of the finger to come as there's a left of center shift in large parts of Quebec.

Conservatives Win

It's only 15 minutes since the polls have closed but the networks are already calling a Conservative victory.

That would be three straight victories. We just have to wait if it's a majority or not.

The NDP are poised to form the official opposition.

Not surprised by what's happening to the Liberals.

If this holds, it will be unprecedented as the NDP never acted as opposition while the Liberals don't know what it's like to come in third.

Since Confederation, Canada has been governed by either the Tories or Liberals.

So, it's a historic development.

Daycare Update

So.

I'm told.

The government is "involved" in daycare for the general interest of the public.

Blah, blah.

Here we are, following every lousy rule in the book. I mean, right down to the lock and key thing for apparently the government posts every "issue" on their site for each daycare.

Meanwhile, don't I run into a daycare, with no park in sight, with a play area...on the roof.

How they got a permit to begin with is beyond me.

Bah.

Using A Woman As Human Shield

On one side, you have elite Navy Seals killing Obama with a bullet to the head and on the other, the "freedom fighters" using a woman as a human shield.

Osama Makes Obama Tough

Obviously, President Obama is taking credit for nailing Osama down. We pretty much knew if that was going to happen under any leader, they would hog the attention. The same will happen when Iraq - when and if - it settles down. Human politics is like that.

However,  if memory serves me right, Obama and the left in general were against any of the wars to begin with - remember those human shields who went to Iraq in protest. Afghanistan may be a different case, but as a whole, the man of peace basically once again showed he is Bush on steroids.

It was interesting to listen and read liberals, who under Bush did nothing but undermine anything he did on the war effort, speak lofty about how Obama is finding his stride and voice as a leader in the aftermath of killing a terrorist. Blah, blah.

But now, it is all different since their guy caught the enemy.

I know I was against it but I inherited it!

Sweet.

Hey, do not get me wrong, all things aside, good on America. Just saying.

Osama Bin Laden Killed

We've been hearing about his death since at least 2007.

The Americans finally got their man ten years after 9/11.

Now we wait to see what the ramifications will be.

The Last Of The Bloggers

We often hear the term "the last of the" something. As in, "he was the last great musician of the era" or the popular "Last of the Mohicans."

But what about "The last of the Romans?"

***

It's funny to see that to some, Brutus was the last of the Romans.

Well, someone had to mark the end of Roman blood and transfer it into Italian, no?

Reminds me a little of the Americans. To the hard core, the last great Americans were the Founding Fathers and that the Republic merged with democracy and later became an oligarchy.

***

Speaking of Rome, or what was left of it anyway, the Justinian period provided some interesting history. Justinian's legal code certainly left a mark on history.

The work (and rivalry) of the great generals, Flavius Aetius, Bonifacius and Belisarius in particular.

And who chronicled all this stuff? Why, Procopius that's who! Speaking of the "last" chaps, he's considered the "last scholar of the anicent world."

***

My goal in life is to become the last of the bloggers.

I'll do this until I'm purpleblue in the face if I have to.

Penny Dreadful

Into Penny Dreadful?

More here.

Aka Dime Novels in North America.

They appeared in England in the 1830s but I came across a type of 'dreadful' dating as far back as 1797 in Germany with Rinaldo Rinaldini: The Robber Captain by Christian August Vulpius.

I think I'm gonna investigate this writing genre more moving forward.

More NHLBS

This. Well, this is just more crap that constitutes as "part of the game" now in the NHL.

Notice the comments. I point to them because this is a prevailing mindset among douchebags who in reality know jack shit about hockey and its history but feel ignorantly compelled to comment about it. I wouldn't be surprised if half of them can't even skate or hold a hockey stick properly.

What Ference did, again, is not a hockey play. It's an act of devious thuggery.

All the more hypocritical given he's gone on record saying there's no room for head shots in the game. Yet, there he is throwing a dirty hit on an unsuspecting player away from the play.

This is not a case of not "keeping your head up." What's destroying hockey and making it a bushwack league is somewhere along the line kids are being taught to specifically clock a person when they've got their head down and away from the play. This is key. Hitting for its own sake has become "normal."

Gutless.

Folk Music Saturday

With Richard and Mimi Farina (Baez) - soeur de et beau frere a Joan.

Richard Farina was killed in a motorcyle crash in 1966 at the age of 29 and Mimi died of cancer in 2001 age 56.

What is it with that window between  Marilyn Monroe's and Jack's death in 1962 and 1963 respectively and 1972 when notable politicians and celebrities like RFK, MLK, Duane Allman, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and a few others died young?

Eminent Domain

What is it?

"Homeowners are currently facing a growing problem. The government is gaining more leeway in what types of property they can obtain through eminent domain and what types of properties they can construct on that land."

That's My Girl

As I was getting ready to leave and while waiting for daughter to rise from her temporary sleep, my wife was watching the news - rephrase that to the Royal Wedding. By 6:20 am my kid was up and rushed over to her mother who said to her, "Look baby doll, that girl just became a princess!"

She glanced over at the television, looked at the clock remembering something from the night before, and with an indifferent look replied, "Mommy, Woody Woodpecker is on!"

That's my girl!

***

Speaking of dated Monarchical weddings, I tend to treat Royalty and its history sorta like I do religion and the Christian church. I'm not a nut about either. Each has had its influence on history but both are institutions run, governed and invaded by mere mortals. I certainly won't get up at 3am in the morning to watch two people get hitched.

So the future King plays Polo and wears a sash saying, 'I will.' As for his bride, a Canadian no less, I swear I heard the words, "I will, eh?"

In the end, when we strip ourselves naked, we all have the same virtues and vices.

And Lord knows British royalty has its share of both.

In the end, again, we're all screwballs.

Itsezhere that the NDP are poised to conquer Quebec over the Bloc Quebecois. When scattered and clueless, referring to the Bloc, send in the clowns as they try and pull out all the stops to stem this turn of event.

Jacques 'Lobster tail' Parizeau ain't gonna cut it I'm afraid, les boys.

God. If not the Bloc, it's the NDP in Quebec.

Proving once again that T.C. is from Jupiter and Quebec is from Planet Claire.

St. Hugh

On this day in 1109,  Hugo van Cluny, make that St. Hugh and advisor to the popes, died.

The man opposed investiture and simony. For that, he deserves a mention here. That, plus my first house was on Cluny St. in Montreal back when I was a lad.

Now you know.

Feel free to use on your date tonight.
